Hello!

I’m Shawna Galey Avanessian

I have a Bachelor’s in Studio Art from Cal State LA and found my love of picture books while working as a preschool teacher. I hope to inspire and enchant new readers and am working hard to build a career as an author/illustrator. I am currently seeking representation.

I love high concept picture books that are funny, perhaps a little weird, but always warm at heart.

I love stories that juxtapose silly and sweet and love to feel moved.

I also love quiet meditative stories that explore tiny moments of our larger universe.

When it comes to illustrating, I work traditionally in watercolor but am handy in Photoshop too. I strive to make playful illustrations, inspired by our diverse and vibrant world.

A little more info (if you’re curious):

• I have an autoimmune disease called ulcerative colitis which makes it difficult to eat cabbage. But that’s ok because I didn’t want to eat it anyway! I use this hindrance as a reminder to bring a little humor into the world.

• I love period pieces.

• I love chocolate.

• I love being cozy.

• I love being cozy while eating chocolate and watching a period piece (especially if it’s spooky)
